ShareWis Inc., in collaboration with NEXT MAKE Co., Ltd., has deployed UVCs (Universal Verifiable Credentials), a digital credential service built on blockchain technology, at an institution in Japan. The institution has already begun issuing and verifying digital certificates with UVCs.
Overview
We developed a system for issuing and managing digital certificates and connected it to UVCs, creating a single workflow that covers everything from issuing a certificate to verifying it.
During the rollout, we worked in person with NEXT MAKE, which leads the project, and the UVCs development team, which provides technical support. Reviewing the actual operating environment together, we fine-tuned how certificates are issued, how they are checked, and how easy they are to operate, one step at a time.
What UVCs makes possible
Anyone who receives a certificate, or needs to check one, can simply scan the QR code on the certificate with a smartphone to confirm that:
- the certificate was officially issued, and
- its contents have not been altered since it was issued.
The only thing recorded on the blockchain is a unique code showing that the certificate is genuine. The personal information written on the certificate is never recorded on the blockchain.
Background
Many training completion certificates and qualification certificates are still issued on paper or as PDFs. Until now, the people receiving them have had few ways to confirm whether a certificate is genuine or whether it has been altered.
Our vision is to “Build a Proof-of-Skill Economy”: a society where each person’s learning and experience are proven as trustworthy data and put to use beyond the boundaries of any single organization. This project is one example of turning the foundation of that vision, trust in credentials, into something real in day-to-day operation.
Looking ahead
We will continue working with NEXT MAKE and other partners to expand the use of digital credentials in a wide range of settings, including educational institutions, companies, and local governments.
